Lacanau is a seaside resort famous for its professional surfing competition, the Lacanau Pro, held every August. During your stay, you’ll be able to watch these top international sportsmen and women take to the waves of the Atlantic Ocean to qualify for one of the entry stages to the world surfing championship, the Championship Tour.
Hiking and cycling trails around Lacanau
For nature and walking enthusiasts, you can walk or cycle along the GR 8 footpath, which passes through the state-owned forest from Hourtin-Plage to Sare in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, or follow the country lanes or cycle paths, such as the Littoral cement path, or forest path n°206, which crosses the state-owned forest. Lacanau is 20 kilometers from the campsite. Once there, you can explore every corner of the town, which is home to many exceptional sites. Start your stroll along the coastline, where you’ll love the calm, clean beaches. The whole family can enjoy a swim in the ocean, or simply have fun building sandcastles. If you fancy it, you can learn to surf on your camping vacation in Hourtin. Lacanau-Océan is packed with exceptional surfing spots, frequented by board sports enthusiasts from all over the world.
Nature lovers will also be seduced by Lacanau’s natural wealth. Indeed, it’s a veritable paradise of greenery. Most of the commune is home to pine forests, inviting you to explore them on a tour like no other. Take a trip to the Etang de Cousseau Nature Reserve, where you’ll discover an exceptional wilderness. Enjoy a pleasant stroll and admire its varied flora and fauna.

If you like walking, take the GR8 trail through the national forest. If you prefer water sports, head for the lake. Enjoy windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking or fishing. While you’re here, don’t miss the weekly market, held every Wednesday morning. It’s the perfect time to stroll through the town’s narrow streets and get to know the Canaulais way of life. Yes, you’d think you were hearing “cannelés”.
Gourmets can take a trip to Mr Cannelé & Mme Macaron to sample the delicious little cakes that are the local specialty.
