What is the Vendée Globe? It’s a breathtaking solo sailing race around the world. What makes this competition unique is that it allows no stopovers and no assistance. Since 1989, the race has been held every four years in Les Sables-d’Olonne, which is the start and finish town.
The racers embark on a round-the-world voyage, starting in Les Sables-d’Olonne and heading south across the Atlantic Ocean. Then they cross the Furious Fifties, a particularly difficult region for even the most experienced sailors. Finally, the participants head back up the Atlantic, battling for ultimate victory.

The town of Les Sables d’Olonne itself is an incredible ocean city. The fine sandy beach is magnificent and perfect for a long stroll along the water’s edge.
For artists, there’s the Museum of Contemporary Art, which is very popular in the region.
Outside town, there are also some incredible places to explore. Visit the colorful fishing port and surrounding natural sites, such as the Olonne marshes, the wild coastline and the observatory.
Finally, the town also offers thalassotherapy facilities and a casino for those looking to relax and have fun.
